My favorite Studio Ghibli movie tells the coming-of-age story of a young witch moving to the city for the first time. Throughout the story, she struggles with finding meaning in her journey, at one point even losing that meaning she has supposed to be so true. Despite its comforting, serene colors and art style, the story does not distance itself from the viewer; it remains very much grounded. Which is why I find this movie so deeply healing—it portrays hope, but in the face of pain.
I first watched Kiki's Delivery Service at one of the lowest points in my life, and it has left a mark on me since. I come back to the movie whenever I'm in a low place, and like a best friend, it always gives me the warmest hug. This piece is my tribute to that story, attempting to stay true to its essence while keeping my own style.
