picnic in a post-apocalyptic world
2023
In 2024, the ocean pH is 8.1—30% more acidic than what it was before the industrial era.
In 2024, more than 8 million tons of plastic enter the ocean.
In 2024, 280 million people worldwide live with depression.
In 2024, 1% of the world’s population owns more than 50% of global wealth.
In 2024, it is so easy to feel hopeless under the seemingly inevitable marching of climate change and capitalistic domination—to feel as though, there is not much optimism left to have for the state of our world.
This piece represents hope.
Among building ruins torn apart by time, abundant animals and overgrown vegetation thrive, and two girls are enjoying a picnic. The sun is dawning on this world. Despite portraying a world in decay, the scenery is rather peaceful. This juxtaposition is so intriguing and aesthetically pleasing to me because it embodies the beauty of resilience.
This piece is my choosing to believe that our world should and will persist, despite it all. Because there is yet so much beauty to be found.
